Chapter 1 Task One
1. Government is the institution through which the state maintains social order, provides pubic services, and enforces decisions that are binding on all people living within the state.
2. Government is necessary for ensuring proper use of force as well as setting up laws and enforceing them. Most importantly the purpose of government is to protect the individual rights of its citizens.
3. Many scholars have created theories trying to explain the origin of government. These theories consist of the Evolutionary Theory stating that government evolved from the family, the Force Theory stating that government emerged when all the people of an area were brought under the authority of one person or group, the Divine Right Theory stating that a god chose certain people to rule, and the Social Contract Theory stating that people would give up to the state of power and in return the government would give them protection
4.The theory used in the United States is the Social Contract Theory as people give up some rights for protection, we do as told by the government so they can protect us.

Hobbes does not like the idea of people being able to overthrow the ruler giving them protection.
Locke likes the idea of people giving up a few right for protection and being able to revolt when things go bad.

Both Locke and Hobbes believed that in a state of nature people would always be at war since there are no rules and it all gets chaotic.

Social contract is a form of government in which people agree to give up some rights and power in order to get protection from the government.

Locke would disagree with having a ruler that has complete power and could not be overthrown. Locke believed that people should give up some rights & power and the government would give them protection in return. If for any reason the government did bad, the people have the right to revolt and rebel.
These are all what Locke called natural rights of the people, they are not given but humans are born with them.
